Birds of the Konkan -Series

—————————

Bird watching at Aarey on 25th December 2021

The Konkan begins south of the Daman Ganga River in Gujarat and extends all the way up to Kerala. It has developed a unique natural history being sandwiched between the towering mountains of the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. The landscape in Konkan is a mix of riverine fronts, mangrove grassland & scrub and forest. The iconic image of coconut fronds waving in the breeze is symbolic of the Konkan.

As an introduction to the Konkan, we will be traveling to Aarey Milk Colony, the vast stretch of green coming into the news for all the wrong reasons. A blend of scrub and forest with some grassland thrown in for good measure; Aarey Milk Colony is a perfect place to start exploring Konkan’s natural history. Simply walking along well paved roads and trails would yield a high of 40 species of birds on a winter’s day. A blend of resident and migratory birds that we hope to spot, we also aim to explain to you why conservation matters and most importantly, help you develop a connect with the wilderness.

This walk is for all age people, we would love children between 9 to 14 years of age to join this . We will be walking at an easy pace through the colony for 3 hours, along with expert naturalists Jayraj Nayak and Pravin Subramanian, watching the birds and the bees go about their daily lives.
